How LaQuan Smith Created a Thunderstorm During New York Fashion Week
On September 14th, New York Fashion Week attendees gathered for the debut of LaQuan Smith’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection. Having earned a reputation for bold, sexy separates that have attracted the likes of Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian, Smith’s newest designs were awaited with bated breath. They did not disappoint! Inspired by the wild beauty of thunderstorms and motivated by his personal experiences in the industry, his latest collection was a commanding work of art.
Invites were sent by Hobnob to a guest list of urban fashionistas, including Christina Milian, Andreja Pelić, Cardi B, and Ty Hunter, and the event took place in New York City’s Spring Studios. Read on to learn more about this notable designer and the incredible way he approaches fashion.

Viewers wove their way through soft knits in deep grays, knowing it was the calm before the tempest. Then, the drama built with layered accents on dangerously fitted dresses and stunningly fearless bodysuits. Finally, guests found themselves in the eye of the hurricane. Signature bodycon and two-piece sets mimicked patterns that pierce through tumultuous night skies, shocking metallics were a strike of lightning, and dark, shimmering dresses were a boom of thunder. It was an experience, not just a fashion show.
On top of all that, the collection was undeniably sexy. There’s a confidence behind each piece, and it was reflected in the models who wore them. You could also see the influence of the late 1990s and early 2000s (the era in which Smith grew up in Queens). His style has a respect for streetwear that is combined with a sophisticated approach to fashion, creating clothing that is irrefutably cool.
